About Us
Welcome to Kilcoona NS
We would like to extend a warm welcome to every child who is coming to school for the first time, to their parents and also to parents of new pupils who already have children in the school. We hope that their time in Kilcoona School will be both happy and enriching.
In our school, we aim to provide a warm and caring environment where every child can achieve their full potential, educationally, physically, socially and emotionally. Kindness, care and understanding of children of such a young age, help us to achieve our objectives. It is the school’s priority to provide a safe, happy and stimulating place to which your child will love to come each day.
School Background
St. Cuana’s N.S. Kilcoona is a co-educational school which, at present, caters for 193 pupils. We have fourteen teachers, nine special needs assistants, a secretary, a caretaker, a cleaner and two bus escorts. The current school was built in 1989 with extensions in 2008, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
The school opened its first ASD class in September 2013 and another in September 2014. We have children travelling from outside our parish to avail of the excellent facilities in Kilcoona.
We have a strong sporting tradition. Our football team won the local Acorn Life primary school football competition in June 2015 and we have weekly lessons in both hurling and football. We have a keen interest in music and drama. We have weekly music workshops and our 5th and 6th classes won the inaugral One Act Drama Primary School finals in November and performed to a full audience in the Town Hall Theatre, Galway in December 2015.
We have earned our 7 th Green Flag. We are proud to be a Green school. We also received flags for our partcipation in START a clinical trial programme ran in NUI, Galway in which we received third place and also a flag for our participation in Junior Enterprise Programme (JEP).
We are continually striving to better our school and one of the areas we are concentrating on currently is our external facilities. 19 th January 2017 saw the start of works on our Astro Turf pitch and this finished on 1 st March 2017, the pitch is in use every day and we are really enjoying it as it has enhanced our outdoor play. We held a Strictly Come Dancing Fundraiser in February 2016 and with huge support from parents and local community, it has helped us achieve this wonderful facility. We are continuing our fundraising efforts in order to finish off this exciting project.
